Deaf Rescue Dog Travels 1,400 Miles for Emotional Reunion with Long-Lost Daughter

Family reunites

A DNA test, a road trip, and a moment that has millions crying happy tears.

Imagine driving 1,400 miles — roughly the distance from New York to Denver — just to give a dog a chance to see her daughter again.

That's exactly what James and Leah Coburn did for their deaf rescue Pit Bull, Milkshake. And the reunion video has since gone viral, amassing over 2 million views on Instagram and hundreds of thousands more on TikTok.

"It is very difficult living 1,400 miles away, but we do this to inspire others to do something for their animals even if it's small… they deserve it."

Who Is Milkshake?

Milkshake's life didn't start easy.

She and her deaf companion, Poundcake, were both rescued from shelters before finding their forever home with the Coburn family in Massachusetts. When the couple welcomed their daughter Chloe, Milkshake immediately bonded with the baby — never leaving her side.

"She never stopped being a mother," James Coburn told Newsweek.

The DNA Test That Shocked Everyone

The couple initially did a doggy DNA test just to learn about their dogs' breeds. But the results came with an unexpected bonus: a list of genetic relatives who had also taken the same test.

That's when they saw it. A 51% DNA match with a three-year-old female Pit Bull named Sage. Sage was Milkshake's daughter.

The Reunion

The now-viral video shows the moment Sage emerges from the car. Milkshake watches intently. Then — recognition. The two dogs run toward each other, sniffing, circling, and playing.

Milkshake's tail was wagging "like crazy" — something she doesn't usually do when meeting new dogs.

Will They See Each Other Again?

Yes. The families have become friends and plan to arrange more playdates in the future. This wasn't a one-time goodbye. It was a new beginning.
